Choose your domain name.
Before you go ahead with a domain name registration, you need to choose your domain name. This needs to be memorable, and also not too long as people will want to be able to type this in from your business card. You may also want to register more than one domain name. Find out more here about choosing your domain name.
Check your domain name availability.
Be careful of where you do this, as some places with this functionality will record what you have typed in, and buy the domain name before you can, then try to sell it to you at an extortionate price! As members of Nominet we are bound by certain rules so can’t do this, not that we would anyway! You can find our domain name search here.
Make sure your domain name registration is in the right name.
This is REALLY important!
When you register your domain make sure it is done in the right name. If it is a website for a limited company, register it in the name of the company. Be careful if you choose to register it in the name of an individual: they will hold all the power over that domain name and will be presumed to be the owner. If you fall out with the individual who is named in the Domain Name Registration, they could easily take over the control of the domain name, and your company may lose it.
You should also be aware of web designers handling your domain name registration – most are not members of Nominet and so do not have to abide by their rules. Too often we have had people come to us to have a new website built by us, only to find that they can’t access their domain, as it is not registered to them. As members of Nominet you can be rest assured that we won’t do this – all our customers domain names are registered in their names, so there will never be an issue with ownership.
I hope this has been useful, and if you have any other questions regarding domain names, feel free to email us or call us on 02393 162393.
