Has “Proper English” had its day?

I don’t know about you, but I am finding that more and more these days businesses are dealing with clients directly through mediums such as Facebook and Twitter. There are many pages on Facebook, and Twitter accounts that have been set up specifically to connect people with businesses, and help promote businesses’ social media profiles.

I myself, have met many a business through Facebook, and placed orders with them. However, something I have noticed is that people are much more willing to shorten words – use text speak – and even, in some situations (and it is mainly females doing this) call potential / current customers “hun” and other similar words.

I’d be interested to hear your thoughts. Is there a line with the written word that shouldn’t be crossed? Does it differ depending on the industry you are working in? Does it put you off when a business uses text speak, or refer to you using a “friendly colloquialism”, or make you feel more relaxed?
